    Unlike concrete or asphalt, interlocking pavers are designed to expand, contract and shift uniformly. This is one of the true benefits of pavers; it is a 50 year product, when installed properly. Below you will find links to the best practices for paver installation. With pavers, although it is easy to be impressed with what the eye can see, it is what is below the surface that creates a lasting project.

    Oil, gas, paint spills or other permanent damage on other surfaces would be cause for substantial repair costs. With pavers, just remove the affected pavers and replace with a new one, it is that easy.

    Having been in the business since the early 90’s, the team at GEM has learned a few “tricks of the trade” that help us offer additional value to our customers.

  • Yes, it is a simple fix replacing a paver or a section of pavers. However, manufacturers are constantly updating their product lines, making finding the right paver or the right color a challenging prospect. If you have the good fortune of finding exactly what is needed, be prepared for the expense of buying an entire pallet, never mind the inconvenience of delivery and storage, as manufacturers rarely separate an entire pallet.

    Finally, assuming all of that works out to your benefit, you will find that a “newer” version of your paver will have a noticeably different look. Pavers that have been exposed to the elements do “wear” over time in terms of their color (more on this below). The reality is that paver color can vary from pallet to pallet simply as the result of the manufacturing process. At GEM, we address this with a two prong approach;

    At installation, we always pull pavers from several pallets at once so that any color subtleties are seamlessly integrated.

    Upon completion of the project, we will retain a small inventory of pavers should there be a need to replace a paver(s) in the future.

    Whether you would like to keep the pavers at your location or have us inventory them at our yard, you will be prepared for the unexpected. There is NO CHARGE for this; it is one of many value added benefits of working with GEM.

    Permanence and endurance mean that paver areas never need re-paving. They are there for the duration.
    During the course of considering pavers, most people can fairly easily recall a paver project that, to be kind, is a mess. Pavers that are pulling away from each other, pavers that have sunk or settled and yes, even pavers that have cracked or split. So how is this a lifetime product?

In almost every instance, these are symptoms of improper installation. Every installation entails a unique set of conditions that need to be addressed if the project is to deliver on its promise of durability. Among them are;

  • Soil Conditions- compaction and water retention
  • Paver Selection- material, shape, laying pattern, based on intended type of traffic
  • Base Composition- gradation of material (ASTM), thickness and compaction
  • Edge Restraint- proper grade material for proposed use
  • Paver Cuts- size tolerance, placement and means of execution
  • Machine Compaction- pounds of force, interlocking joint material and manner of execution
  • Job Access- use of construction machinery and potential adverse impacts/challenges

With over 20 years of installation experience , across all types of climates, varying soil conditions and intended use applications, GEM is well equipped to recognize and address these variables before the first shovel hits the ground.

Whether it’s your home, business or a property that you are entrusted to manage for others, GEM believes that your involvement in the process is an important factor in the project’s success.

GEM provides every client with a construction plan that outlines the proposed schedule, the manner and means of execution of the project and any other information that is relevant to the work being done. If there are changes, they are communicated in a timely manner so that our impact on your everyday life is as minimal as possible.

Frequently, we are asked what we charge per square foot to install pavers. Given all the variables we’ve just outlined, one can see that such a simple formula would be negligent to client and company alike.

All too often, we have encountered jobs that suffered in quality because they weren’t bid properly. This benefits neither the client nor the contractor. The dollars saved up front by the customer tend to be lost multiple times over when the work fails at a later date. Similarly, we see projects that could’ve been done for far less money by a contractor who is plugged into the industry’s latest best practices, equipment and available resources and research.

With some basic information and a brief site visit, we can assess fairly quickly a range of where your project will fall. Sometimes we are the best price, sometimes we are not. What we do promise is to give you the right price for the job done right.

Pavers wear well and are easy to maintain.
Someone at some point has probably told you a couple of things about pavers;

“You never have to worry about them once they’re installed.”

Yes and No. Structurally, a properly installed paver surface requires very little ongoing maintenance. Approximately once a year, it is recommended to replenish the sand in the paver joints. This is a simple process that can be done by the homeowner. This will help maintain the interlock properties of the pavers.

Aesthetically, much like anything that is left outside, pavers will collect residue and debris on their surface. Pressure washing the pavers once a year is also recommended for optimum appearance. We would strongly suggest that a surface area type pressure cleaner is used, not a wand. Using a wand will leave uneven results and displace a disproportionate amount of joint sand.

“Don’t seal your pavers or you will have to seal them every year.”

While you don’t have to seal your pavers, once you do, it’s up to you when and how often you do it. It’s just a personal preference, much like painting your house. In addition to keeping the pavers looking “new”, sealing will help keep the sand in the joints and make it easier to clean off the loose debris.
